Description: The red panda is a medium-sized bear-like mammal with a thick, rusty to deep chestnut colored coat with blackish under parts. The head is round with pointed ears and a fox-like face. It has eye patches and broad, white cheek patches, and its pointed ears are white. The tail is long and bushy with broad, brown and ginger rings. The claws are sharp and partly retractable. The red panda is a good tree climber and spends most of its time in trees, when it is not foraging.
Range/Habitat: The red panda is found in a mountainous band from Nepal through northeastern India and Bhutan into China, Laos and northern Myanmar. It lives in forests with a bamboo understory at altitudes, generally, between 5,000 to 15,700 feet above sea level. The types of forests it inhabits include sub alpine temperate, subtropical, and tropical.
Diet: Wild: Main diet bamboo (leaves and shoots in spring). Supplemented with berries, blossoms, fungi, seeds, acorns, eggs, young birds, small rodents and insects.
Zoo: Bamboo, fruit, and biscuits (chow food)

This is a breeding pair, and there may also be offspring present in the exhibit. They usually give birth in June. The offspring will later be sent to live at other zoos.
