Potawatomi Zoo is Happy to Announce Our Newest Arrival

A newborn male Amur Leopard cub made his début into the world on December 18th at Potawatomi Zoo and while the staff was ecstatic about the cub, “Pearl” was a first time mom and we knew the cub would have a few milestones to overcome. We are pleased to announce that our cub has been given a clean bill of health. He has received several “veterinary checks” and vaccines to assure he will continue to remain healthy and grow strong.

Nearly a year ago, we traded Amur Leopard males with the Lee Richardson Zoo. “Preston” came to Potawatomi Zoo to pair with “Pearl” as a recommendation from the Amur Leopard Species Survival Plan. It is reported that only 25-34 Amur Leopards are left in the wild, with just over 80 Amur Leopards in U.S. Zoos. Zoos across the nation are coming together to help save this graceful and beautiful cat that is very near extinction. The birth of this rare cub contributes to a breeding program that is ensuring a sustainable population of Amur Leopards.

Due to the size of the cub and spring temperatures the cub will not be on exhibit when the Zoo opens March, but as spring turns into summer, and he continues to grow our newest Zoo baby will be on exhibit with mom at the Zoo. Once the cub makes his debut on exhibit a naming contest will be held to name the cub. Raffle tickets will be sold and the winner will have the opportunity to name the baby with the proceeds of the raffle going to Amur Leopard conservation.

Butterflies In Living Color opens Memorial Weekend!

Butterflies in Living Color! will feature a full immersion experience by allowing visitors to walk through a garden while exotic butterflies fly freely around you. There will be hundreds of butterflies on display and arriving weekly to ensure that you will see many wonderful varieties as they change throughout the season.

The hours of the garden will be from 10am-5pm with last tickets sold at 4:30pm. Tickets are $2.00 and support butterfly conservation on a global level. Your visit to the garden provides a unique experience as you leisurely stroll while watching the fluttering butterflies collect nectar from the plants and the feeding stations scattered throughout the walkway so if you are into photography bring your camera because there are always great opportunities for close up shots of these beautiful creatures.   Also, there is a large window to allow you to see into the quarantine room and watch the emerging butterflies from their chrysalis. As a special treat for our visitors, once a day we will release the new butterflies into the garden and provide time for you to be able to interact with our staff and ask any questions you may have.

There are many ways to support the Butterflies in Living Color! exhibit. As a seasonal exhibit that will be open yearly there are multiple sponsorship opportunities within the exhibit including benches, water fountains and quarantine facilities. You may also purchase a donor brick, which will be placed along the path inside the garden, and commemorate a special occasion or honor a loved one.

We are also offering a special Breakfast with the Butterflies behind the scenes opportunity. For more information click here.
