Project Description
Pancake Tortoise
Malacochersus tornieri
Animal Class: Reptile
Length: Around 7 inches as adults
Weight: Around 1 pound
Lifespan: Around 30 years
Diet: Grasses and other vegetation.
Habitat: Dry savannas and semi-desert in southern Kenya and northern/eastern Tanzania.
Description: This critically endangered small tortoise species is known for having a thin, flat, flexible shell. Uniquely among tortoises, it doesn’t rely on hiding in its shell. Instead, when confronted with danger, the pancake tortoise will run and climb into narrow rock crevices for protection.
Although pancake tortoise species are now protected in Kenya, Tanzania, and by the European Union, loss of habitat and illegal pet trade have contributed to the decrease of the wild population.
Conservation Status: Critically Endangered
Our Animals: Flapjack and Bisquick
